On February 15, childhood friends Malcolm Bricklin and Harvey Lamm, despite their lack of auto experience, incorporate Subaru of America. Their original plan is to sell only motor scooters, but Bricklin, while on a trip to Japan, is introduced to the 360.
1968 Subaru introduces the 360, an inexpensive, distinctive economy car powered by a two-stroke engine. It claimed 66.3 mpg and sold for $1,297.
1975 Subaru launches the Subaru 4-wheel drive (4WD) wagon, the first 4WD passenger car sold in the U.S. The vehicle establishes the company as the leading 4WD niche marketer.
Official Car of the U.S. Ski Team
1976 Subaru and the U.S. Ski Team begin a partnership, and the team adopts the Subaru 4WD wagon as its official car.
1977 Subaru introduces the BRAT (Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter), a small dual-range 4WD vehicle.
World Rally Championship
1980 A Subaru team appears for the first time in the World Rally Championship (WRC).
Subaru Tecnica International Established
1988 This division manages motorsports activities, including the FIA WRC, and the development and sales of specially designed sports components.
The Subaru badge takes on a new look with a fourth-generation design that evolves into the current badge.
1989 The Legacy model, a clear move upscale for the brand, is introduced.
1991 Subaru introduces its first performance luxury coupe, the quirky and sporty 1992 SVX with a 3.3-liter, 6-cylinder engine.
1993 Subaru introduces the Impreza, available as an economy compact sedan or sport wagon.
1995 Subaru introduces the Outback, the world’s first sport utility wagon.
1998 Subaru introduces the Forester, a sport utility vehicle (SUV), smaller than the Outback but bigger than the Impreza.
2001 Subaru unveils the Impreza WRX Sedan and Sport Wagon.
2002 Subaru introduces the Baja crossover vehicle.

2012 Subaru introduces the Crosstrek.

National Parks Zero-landfill Initiative
2015 Subaru announces it will share its knowledge of zero-landfill practices with the National Park Service to reduce landfill waste from the parks.
2018 The 3-row Ascent will be launched.
