Simon and Sophie Cole Share a Love Their Family Subaru
If you want to see 12-year-old Sophie Cole smile, just watch her scale a steep rock face. Or hurtle through a mud pit. Or crouch down to help change brake pads. The adventures of the petite Atlanta-area girl are shared – and often filmed – by her father, Simon Cole, who owns a 2011 Outback and a 2009 Legacy.
Runs in the Family
Simon has been teaching his daughter about the inner workings of cars since she was 4 years old. Although she can’t yet drive a car, she is already tackling basic maintenance like changing air filters and brake pads. “She always had this natural curiosity about cars. Plus, her small hands make her very useful for getting into tight spaces,” recalls Simon with a laugh. “My dad is a really good teacher because he’s creative,” says Sophie. “And because he has a British accent, it’s fun to listen to him speak.”

Cheering Her On
Sophie’s love of climbing is entirely her own. “I’m terrified of heights,” notes Simon. He is her biggest cheerleader, however, driving Sophie to train for team competitions in bouldering, speed climbing, and cliff facing four times a week. He also spirits her into the wilderness to tackle outdoor climbs. “We tie the crash pads to the roof rack on top of our Outback,” he says. “I’m sure people on the road are giving us funny looks, wondering what they are.”
Ready for the Next Challenge
Where does Sophie’s competitive spirit come from? “I’d say it stems from her desire to be the best,” reveals her dad. “Which makes us do things just to prove that we can.” Sophie’s next goal: “I want my dad to teach me how an engine works. That’d be a great new challenge.” And if there’s one thing Simon and Sophie love, it’s a challenge.
