Cityside Subaru Gives Technology to Students
Since 2007, Subaru of America, Inc. has donated $50 million to charities nationwide as part of its annual Share the Love event. For every new car sold or leased during the event, Subaru donates $250 on behalf of the purchaser to their choice of participating charities. In 2013, Subaru retailers were able to add a hometown charity to the mix of charities that new vehicle owners could choose to support during the event. What’s more, several retailers provided additional donations to their selected hometown charity.
A Passion for Education
Rick White, general manager of Cityside Subaru in Belmont, Massachusetts, gets excited when he talks about education – especially local schools. That’s why he decided that Cityside Subaru would target the Foundation for Belmont Education (FBE) as its first Share the Love hometown charity. “The Foundation for Belmont Education has become a powerful force in the K-12 curriculums,” notes White, and making it the Share the Love focus was a natural for Cityside and the town of Belmont.
To engage customers, the FBE printed cards explaining its work with Belmont schools and showing how donations are used. “Customers were pleasantly surprised to learn that $250 was being contributed on their behalf,” says White. In 2014, Cityside Subaru helped raise $12,400 for the Foundation during Share the Love.
Fostering Excellence through the Foundation for Belmont Education
The FBE is a nonprofit organization that works in tandem with the Belmont Public Schools District to foster the creativity of teachers, stimulate the interest of students, and support the tradition of excellence in Belmont public schools. The money is not used as a substitute for tax dollars that fund the school; instead, FBE works with the community and businesses to raise money to support curriculum enrichment and professional development and technology.
One of the most successful programs is the iPad pilot program, which puts technology into the hands of high school students taking courses in American Studies. Although Belmont may be a small town, the FBE has funded 556 projects that benefit teachers and students.
2015 Share the Love
White is so pleased by what his team has been able to accomplish that they have selected FBE again to provide enhanced educational resources in the local schools. “I am proud to be part of the Share the Love event, and proud of how Subaru started this program for retailers across the country,” he says. “I really love it. It has been tremendously successful on so many levels.” White points to increased referrals, noting that people who purchased or leased a Subaru during the Share the Love event have recommended Cityside to friends. Cityside Subaru has always been community minded, supporting causes from the Fenway Institute to the Animal Rescue League of Boston. Share the Love demonstrates one more way that Cityside Subaru is devoted to its community.
