Exploring the City, Country and Beyond in the All-New 2017 Subaru Impreza.
“This is nice,” my mom said, sliding into the passenger seat of the all-new 2017 Subaru Impreza Sport. Mom usually picks me up on the way to the Collingswood Farmers’ Market, but on this day we switched because I was testing out the new Impreza.
Mom is a dedicated Baja owner, a vehicle Subaru last made in 2006, and I drive an older SUV, so this was a unique opportunity for us to test out a state-of-the-art vehicle built to provide a smooth ride; exceptional safety and handling; and take on any road challenge – not that we encountered much of one on this leg of the journey.
Subaru Impreza is the longest-lasting vehicle in its class.1
The drive to the farmers’ market from my house was only two blocks (hey, it’s a small town), but compared to my SUV, we were both impressed at how the Impreza glided down the road. This was no doubt due in large part to the vehicle’s new global platform, which uses more high-strength steel for a quieter ride.
Once we arrived, we shopped for a big family holiday meal and, after we walked back to the Impreza, I appreciated the Keyless Access with Push-Button Start and not having to root into my bags to find the key. Also, thanks to an expanded cargo area, the Impreza fit our heavy load of fresh vegetables, meats and cheeses with room to spare.

The next day, I headed to Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, to pick up a couple of friends, one of whom planned on joining me for a trek at Memorial Lake State Park. As I set off, there was a fair amount of stop-and-go traffic around Philadelphia, which the Impreza handled with sure-footed ease.
When another driver tried to squeak around me to get through the toll-booth onto the Pennsylvania Turnpike, the Blind-Spot Detection2 feature lit a light on the side mirror. “Yikes,” I thought. “That was helpful.” As useful as the Rear-Vision Camera was in parallel parking in front of my house, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert got me out of an almost-scrape. Though my drive didn’t test all the safety functions of the 2017 Impreza, a host of cutting-edge safety features are available. Among others, these include Reverse Automatic Braking,3 which automatically applies the brakes when there’s a risk of collision when travelling in reverse, and LED Steering Responsive Headlights, which automatically track in the direction of driving.
On the highway, the Impreza, which gets up to 38 mpg with standard AWD,4 gripped the road tightly. And the cabin’s sporty interior, outfitted in red gauges, red stitching and chrome pedals, all added to the overall feel of a zippy, fun drive.
The 2017 Subaru Impreza has a longer wheelbase than the previous model, which gives it more cabin room – so I asked my two 6-foot-plus friends to sit in the backseat as we headed out. Casey, who looks like he could step straight onto a professional football field, said “I could sit here,” approvingly. Nathan, who has the tall and lean frame of a runner, sat next to him, stretched out his legs and put his arm across the backseat. “Yeah, I’d go on a road trip with you in this,” he said. “But I’d still fight for co-pilot.”
Later, after dropping off Casey, Nathan and I drove to Memorial Lake State Park to take a short walk on the lakefront trail, then took the Impreza up a steep, unpaved road to the top of Second Mountain – specifically to its Hawk Watch, where we hoped to see some beautiful birds.

The all-wheel drive handled the rocky road with ease. Although we didn’t see any hawks, we did see a spectacular view down both sides of the mountain. It was bitter cold, so I flipped on the heated seats for a comfy return drive.
On my way home, I called my mom using the hands-free multimedia system, which I found impressively easy to use.
“What did you think?” she asked, her voice coming through loud and clear.
“It’s a pretty sweet ride,” I said as I wove around a slow-moving car on I-95. For someone who craves adventure in all aspects of life, prioritizes quality and safety, and loves being wired-in, the all-new 2017 Impreza is a great fit.
