Mollusks and Mammoths and Chickens – Oh My!
The American Association for the Advancement of Science and Subaru of America Identify Award-winning Science Books
Since 2005, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA), through their Science Books & Film Prizes for Excellence, have teamed up to recognize outstanding books that present sound scientific information to young audiences.
The submissions for 2016 were assessed by a group of librarians, scientists, and science literacy specialists, who awarded prizes to four finalists, one for each category: Children’s Science Picture Book, Middle Grades Science Book, Young Adult Science Book, and Hands On Science Book.
Inspiring Young Readers
The AAAS and SOA not only recognize the best-of-the-best science books for kids; they give them out, too. In 2015, the partnership distributed more than 41,095 winning books to schools around the nation as part of the Subaru Loves Learning initiative − with the hope of inspiring young readers and budding scientists. As AAAS Senior Project Director Maria Sosa attests, the positive influence of these books will continue far into the future. “The impact of the Subaru Loves Learning book donations is tremendous,” she says.
These books will be in classroom libraries for many years. Each book can touch the lives of many children, helping them to build important reading skills and inspiring them to learn about and possibly consider a career in science.
